Test and refresh your knowledge of earthquakes and their effects on the East Bay as we explore the Hayward Fault. Voted the best of the best teachers at Bishop O’Dowd High School, environmental explorer Tom Tyler returns to take us to some familiar places while sharing with us unfamiliar stories and observations. Starting at OMCA, we will board a bus to take us to prominent sites to learn about the effects of previous earthquakes and plate movements. We will travel to Hayward to compare and contrast the old and new City Halls, then return to Oakland and the Mormon Temple to learn about its unusual design. After lunch at Montclair Park, we will visit the Gingerbread Firehouse before taking a walk across the UC Berkeley campus. The final stop will be OMCA, where we’ll learn how the 1868 earthquake affected buildings on the floodplain.

This bus tour will include about three miles of walking. Participants should wear layered clothing, be prepared for inclement weather, and bring cameras, binoculars, and note pads. Bottled water and lunches will be provided. The tour begins and ends at OMCA, and carpooling is encouraged. Cost is $80/person.
