Art Guild Travel | Carmel Valley and Big Sur

Tuesday, May 7–Thursday, May 9, 2013
Tuesday, May 7, 2013 - 12:00am

Join the Art Guild for a “Spring Surprise” trip to artists’ studios, private collections, and galleries in sunny Carmel Valley and the magnificent Big Sur area. We’ll see a wide variety of contemporary art, glass, sculpture, and of course the beauty of the area.

Highlighted artists include Cassandria Blackmore, widely recognized as a pioneering artist for her unconventional approach to reverse painting on glass, Patricia Qualls, a highly recognized expressionist artist who follows the rich traditions of early-to-mid twentieth century artists, and Richard MacDonald, who is world renowned for his dynamic, sensitive works that reveal a profound understanding of the human experience and which celebrate the ascendancy of the human spirit.

Places of interest include the Coast Gallery Big Sur, which began as a small outlet for Big Sur artists and is now the largest known gallery of American Crafts in the United States. We’ll also visit The Hawthorne Gallery in Big Sur, representing the artwork of the multi-talented Hawthorne family as well as the work of selected outstanding artists across the country.

The visit would not be complete without a trip to the Monterey Museum of Art, where we’ll view Monterey Now: Johnny Apodaca, the first exhibition of new works created by the artist while living in Umbria, Italy, Spring 2012. Mr. Apodaca will speak to us about his inspiration in painting the gouaches—light-filled studies of the Italian countryside—during his sojourns in the Umbria region over the past several years.
