Art Guild Day Trip | Art, Artists, and More Art

Thursday, October 3, 2013, 8:30 am–4 pm
Thursday, October 3, 2013 - 8:30am

Come along on an adventurous trip with the Art Guild as we explore our art-filled East Bay “backyard.” Our first stop is the dramatic Lafayette hillside home of Joy and James Karol, whose eclectic collection includes art objects from Vietnam, a vibrant Hung Liu painting, and sculptures by Amy Evans McClure whom we will meet later in the day. Next will be the Berkeley studio of painter Judith Belzer who explores the relationship between nature and culture in her works. Then on to the Rockridge studio of Sherry Karver who combines photography, traditional painting, digital technology, and narrative text in her own innovative style.

Lunch will be at the artist-owned funky Mua restaurant, where guest speaker Marianna Stark, collector, publisher of Stark Guide to Bay Area Art, and art advisor, will speak to us about Oakland as the home of so many working artists, the politics of art, public art, and more.

After lunch we meet Sam Perry in his studio where he sculpts from logs with a chain saw. His works are displayed at Runnymede Sculpture Farm, our September day trip destination. Next stop will be the Oakland hills home and studio of ceramic sculptor Amy Evans McClure with her notable clay horse heads. Her varied sculptures reflect Amy’s long-time involvement in Eastern philosophy and religion.

The day culminates at the beautiful woodland home of our own Art Guild member Helena Foster, art collector extraordinaire.

Please wear walking shoes as there will be some steep driveways on this fast-paced day.
