Guide to San Francisco Bay Area Creeks
SAUSAL CREEK, 1897
Sausal Creek, here referred to as Diamond Creek, was already heavily modified in 1896. In
the 1850s, the redwoods in the headwaters were logged, and the trees drug down the creek. The
creek had ended in a willow thicket (sausal) in the area labeled here as Fruitvale. The very
straight course of the creek bed downstream to San Leandro Bay suggests that this was a ditch
dug to drain the thicket.
