Ophelia Ho has worked professionally as a graphic designer.
This past year she
dedicated her time to work exclusively on a personal project focused on
traditional scenes of Chinese culture and daily life.
The artist
chose giclee printing as the medium to manifest this limited edition series of eighteen
illustrations. Her attraction to giclee print as a medium is inspired through
her experience with silk screen printing and digital print.
Inspiration for these giclee prints was fueled
through her childhood memories of Chinese traditional ink and brush paintings
created by her grandfather and her mother. Existing in between Chinese and American
culture, it gives her insight to both places. By using mixed traditional images
and modern color rendition she produced unique illustration with meticulous
details. The artist is captivated by the simplicity and complexity of the
Chinese culture which allows her to experience light, depth, and energy in her
own delicate lines and rich colors of the elements. The relationship between
traditional elements and modern color renditions are a recurring theme of these
illustrations. These compositions include architecture, people, nature and
other unique elements. Through these illustrations the ways of life from the
past are told. The old becomes the new.
On view in the OMCA Store January 28-February 26, 2012
