Friday Nights @ OMCA: Nowruz Celebration
Welcome in the start of Spring with a special edition of Friday Nights @ OMCA celebrating Nowruz or Persian New Year. This celebration is internationally recognized for representing the values of peace and solidarity between generation and promoting neighborliness and friendship among people. Nowruz falls on the Spring Equinox, March 21 this year, which marks the transition into the new season as the days begin to get lighter. Join OMCA and the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California to enjoy festive Persian music, encounter the traditional elements of Nowruz through a Haft-Seen display, and take in exhilarating dance in honor of the holiday! Enjoy half-price admission, live music, hands-on activities for kids, a pop-up art market in the Redwood Burl area, and extended OMCA Store hours. Get a taste of the hottest in Bay Area curbside cuisine!
What to expect on March 24:
5–9 pm: Half-off gallery admission for adults, free for ages 18 and under
5–9 pm: Local beverage specials in the Blue Oak beer garden
5–9 pm: All Museum galleries open late
5–9 pm: Gourmet food trucks from Off the Grid featuring the best in local cuisine: get the weekly list here
5–9 pm: OMCA Store open with great artisan California-themed gifts, apparel, books, toys, and more
5–9 pm: Marketplace @ OMCA, featuring local vendors selling their wares in Redwood Burl area
5–6:30 pm: March resident DJ Nina Sol spinning hits in the 10th Street Amphitheater
5–8 pm: Display of traditional Nowruz spread, called Haft-Seen, symbolizing new life and renewal for the Persian New Year, presented by the Islamic Cultural Center of Northern California
5–8 pm: Family-friendly drop-in activity: Make wings for your sneakers to wear inspired by special exhibition Out of the Box: The Rise of Sneaker Culture
6:30–7 pm: Tombak dance demonstration by Miriam Peretz in the 10th Street Amphitheater
7–9 pm: Classical Persian musician Amir Abbas Etemadzadeh playing Tombak music in the 10th Street Amphitheater
7:30–7:45 pm: A Snack Size Docent Tour, a fifteen-minute mini-tour led by a talented OMCA Docent to introduce you to one of the Galleries—you won't know which until you arrive!
Garden Access: Please note, OMCA's garden and terraces are now closed during Friday Nights @ OMCA until April 2017. More information on garden access.
Cost: Half-price gallery admission for adults, ages 18 and under are free. Admission for Members is always free. Cash bar. Prices vary for Off the Grid food trucks.
Transportation: OMCA is located one block from the Lake Merritt BART Station. Event parking is available at the Museum for a $7 flat fee after 5 pm.
