Tonight at Friday Nights @ OMCA, celebrate diverse winter traditions reflected in the Bay Area, including Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Christmas, Balinese, and Latin American winter festivities. Enjoy half-price admission, expanded offerings of winter-themed activities for kids, and a special lineup of live music and dance from local performers while we wrap up the final Friday Nights @ OMCA for 2017. View our special holiday hours including late night gallery hours on Friday evenings between now and January 12, 2018, when Friday Nights @ OMCA begins again with the new year. 

Watch a special Balinese dance & music performance by Gamelan Sekar Jaya Ensemble, and a special musical event created by Thingamajigs. Join Hanukkah-themed activities with the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund, Storytime with the Oakland Public Library, and more as we explore the richness of end-of-the-year winter traditions.

Late Night Gallery Hours

5–9 pm: Galleries Open Late 
Admission is half-off for adults with an additional $4 charge for special exhibitions. Ages 18 and under are always free on Friday Nights @ OMCA.

Music, Dance, and Performances

Bay Area's own DJ Juan Data spinning world music hits.  

7–9 pm: Music — Gamelan Sekar Jaya 
10th Street Amphitheater
Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s music and dance range from traditional Balinese repertoire to cutting-edge compositions. The 60-plus company of musicians and dancers of GSJ play on several sets of Balinese instruments. Formed in 1979 and based in Berkeley, the company is renowned for its exploration of traditional and contemporary forms through long-term residencies with Bali's finest artists.


Family Activities

5–8 pm: Family-Friendly Drop-In Activity
Create a candle for your family’s holiday inspired by Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa traditions.

5–7:30 pm: Family Reading Time with the Oakland Public Library
Explore library resources provided by the OPL’s bike-powered book-mobile.

6–6:30 pm: OMCA Family Storytime with the Oakland Public Library
Join a family-friendly story with our friends from the Oakland Public Library.

5–8 pm: Traditions & Demonstrations
Participate in Hanukkah-themed activities with the Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund, view a Kwanzaa table set with symbolic items for the home by artist Candi Farlice, and explore an altar dedicated to La Virgin de Guadalupe created by artists Bea Hocker and Alicia Diaz.

5–8 pm: Gallery of Thingamajigs
Gallery of California Art, Level 3* 
Follow your ears and discover amazing possibilities for making sounds. In celebration of their 20th anniversary, local arts organization Thingamajigs brings together some of the most exciting and unique musicians and musical groups to explore and manipulate the acoustical space of OMCA’s galleries. See how the most unusual of objects can be transformed into musical instruments!

5–9 pm: Off the Grid Food Trucks
10th Street
Enjoy a rotating lineup of local gourmet food trucks from Off the Grid.

5–9 pm: Cash Bar and Lounge inside Nature’s Gift
Great Hall, Level 2
A new way to do Friday Nights @ OMCA! Enjoy libations in the comfy lounge area inside the immersive exhibition Nature’s Gift: Humans, Friends & the Unknown. Access included with special exhibition admission.

5–9 pm: Blue Oak Beer Garden
Blue Oak Beer Garden (near Koi Pond)
Enjoy beer and wine specials from local makers.

Kick back and relax with seating available on 10th Street (no alcoholic beverages allowed), the 10th Street Amphitheater, Oak Street Plaza, or café patio. To protect the Museum collections, food and drink are not allowed inside the galleries unless otherwise designated. Please note the OMCA Gardens are closed during Friday Nights @ OMCA through March 2018.

Redwood Burl Area
Explore an expanded Marketplace @ OMCA featuring local Bay Area artists, jewelers, and craftspeople, and henna tattoo for all ages. Perfect for your holiday shopping list!

6–9 pm: OMCA Store Book Signing
Level 2
Meet Chris Johnson, one of the artists behind Question Bridge: Black Males, and get your signed copy of the accompanying publication.
Discover great California-themed gifts by local artisans, our broad book selection, find exhibition-themed favorites, and more inside the OMCA Store. 

5–9 pm: Pop-Up Store inside Nature’s Gift
Great Hall, Level 2
Enhance your in-gallery experience with exhibition-themed gifts, games, and light-up swag. Access included with special exhibition admission.  




OMCA is located one block from the Lake Merritt BART Station. Event parking is available at the Museum for a $7 flat fee after 5 pm. Museum garage closes at 10:30 pm.
